The boundaries for the real estate neighbourhood in Oakville known as Central Oakville are the Sixteen Mile Creek to the East, Dorval Drive to the West, Speers Road to the North and Lake Ontario to the south. Central Oakville offers a mix of home styles. Being central to the downtown core and the harbour, it is not known for entry level priced homes. Many of the one time cottages south of Lakeshore Road have been torn down and replaced with large luxury homes. Overlooking the harbour are exclusive townhomes built on property that was once a factory. The original cottages in this area once housed the hired help for the wealthy who owned estates along Oakville's lakeshore.
Many homes in the Queen Mary Drive and Stewart Street area were built just after WW2 and most are bungalows and one and a half storeys. Larger homes were built in the River Side Drive area in the 1950's, many along the banks of the Sixteen Mile Creek. Some of these properties offered riparian rights and homeowners were able to build docks and moor their boats down the embankments in their backyards.
The Kerr Street area, or what is now called Kerr Village has had a transformation over the past few years. Once known as Oakville's second downtown, the streetscape has had an overhaul and many new businesses are setting up shop. Some wonderful restaurants and antique stores have helped to revitalize this area. Some older apartment buildings have been demolished and there are major plans for new commercial and residential development.
Central Oakville is also home to the newest and most exclusive condo real estate project, overlooking the harbour. and offering multi-million dollar units. Being so central, most amenities are a short stroll away from this neighbourhood. These include grocery stores, parks, arena, fitness centre, restaurants, library, pool, coffee shops, boating, the Oakville Club, etc.
The entry level price for a detached home in this area is close to $500,000 with upper end properties topping the million dollar mark.
